Wolfram Römmelt is a freelance German journalist, specialized in the German wine market. In his mind, "Germany is primarily a wine consuming country. We drink 20 million hectoliters each year. However, we are also a major producing country: 100 000 hectares of vineyards produce 9 to 10 million hectoliters per year.
Amongst the wines drunk in Germany, only 45% are made in Germany. We import a lot (12 to 14 million hectoliters per year), mainly red wines coming from Italy, France and Spain. The majority of importation are bulkwines, only one third of imported wine is actualy bottled.
Many German consumers buy wine cheap. You should know that the largest seller of wine in Germany is the hard-discounter Aldi. In supermarkets, the average price for a bottle of wine is around 2-3 €. It must be said that the most sold format in Germany is the 1 L bottle, and I think it will go on for some time. "
