Trends : Wines without PGI experience a sluggish campaign (Jan 29, 2010)
In late December, the volume of transactions in France regarding table wines with the mention of grape hardly reached 100 000 hl.
Reds and rosés amount to 42 000 hl, and whites to 55 000 hl. The share of red and rosé wines represent only 4% of the total volumes of wines without PGI, according to France Agrimer. The average price of 61.88 € / hl is clearly drawn upwards by the wines with mention of Pinot, which prices climb to 101.67 € / hl. Produced in IGP, the same Pinot earns 124.59 € / hl, representing a differential greater than that observed for other varietals: merlot cost 53.08 € / hl without PGI and 53.98 € / hl in PGI, Cabernet Sauvignon 55.08 € / hl without PGI against 55.12 € / hl in PGI.

In white, one is also struck by the difference in trading volumes of wines without PGI with mention of the variety (55 000 hl) and those that are made in PGI with reference to the grape (420 000 hl). The average price there - 33.20 € / hl - is clearly pulled down by wines with no PGI from the Charentes, from the variety Ugni Blanc, sold at very low prices, which constitute nearly three-quarters of trading volumes (40 000 hl to 19.44 € / hl). When it comes to other varieties, the firrential is greater than in red between grape variety with and without PGIs : Chardonnay is trading at 74.29 € / hl without PGI and 93.12 € / hl with PGI; Sauvignon sells for 64,32 € / hl without PGI and 90.14 € / hl with PGI.

The operators are particularly cautious, as this is a year of transition between table wines and wines without geographical indication with possible indication of grape variety and vintage. This reform applies to the wines of the vintage 2009, but clearly, many operators are still wondering and waiting to see how their clients will position themselves. Another brake frustrates on the market: the U.S. refuse to mention the vintage on this type of product. Negotiations are underway with Europe to settle this dispute.
