Spanish wine consumption at its lowest level
(Mar 20, 2007)
Wine consumption in Spain has attained a historically low level. According to the Agricultural Ministry, consumption per capita showed a 5.2 % decrease in volume in 2006 at a level of 10.84 million hl. In value, the decrease is attenuated (-4%) as the table wines are the most touched by this disaffection. Considering the population increase, per capita consumption is ever lower (-6.9%) to 24.9 l per capita (26 l in 2005). This level is caused by a large drop in the “out-of-house” consumption (-8.3%) as it represents a large part of the consumption (56.8%). The “at-home” consumption is slightly lower (-0.8%).
